An early Tuesday morning double-shooting left a Sunnyvale man dead and an East Palo Alto man in intensive care at the hospital.

Capt. Craig Farley, with the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety, said police received calls at 4:03 a.m. reporting the sound of gunfire near Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road and Alberta Avenue in south central Sunnyvale.

When police arrived, they found a man at the intersection who had been shot. Farley said he didn't know whether the victim was found inside a nearby vehicle or on the ground. The 19-year-old Sunnyvale man was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead and became the city's first homicide victim of 2005.

Police later found a second shooting victim in an apartment complex on Alberta. The 21-year-old East Palo Alto man is being treated in the intensive care unit at an area hospital, Farley said. Police believe he was in the same car as the slain man when he was shot.

Investigators are still trying to piece together what led to the violence and who was involved.

``We're receiving conflicting information regarding vehicles and suspects. We're trying to get accurate information before we broadcast it,'' Farley said. ``We're still talking to witnesses.''

Farley said investigators so far have no reason to believe the shooting is gang-related.
